This fall Theatre In the Raw presents The Threepenny Opera, Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill’s classic work of 1928, under the direction of Jay Hamburger and music director Earle Peach. Brecht and Weill turned to John Gay’s 18th-century The Beggar’s Opera to fashion this savage, biting commentary on bourgeois capitalism and modern morality. Set in Commercial Drive-like Victorian London, the bitter tale is told of the handsome flirtatious outlaw known as Mack the Knife. A secret marriage, an underworld boss, betrayal, prison and a sentence to death are the elements that lead to a menacing finale of ferocious irony.

Come on down to the Carnegie, the heart of our community, as we say ‘Thank you! That’s a wrap! Another Festival under our belts! Here’s to next year!”

Ukrainian Hall Community Concert & Supper

The festival ends on a high note at the East End’s historic Ukrainian Hall with lively music, invigorating dance and colourful costumes at the Ukrainian Hall Community Concert & Supper. This annual favourite, produced with the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians, features the Barvinok Choir and the award-winning Dovbush Dancers. Special guests include Zeellia, Vancouver’s own Slavic soul band led by Beverly Dobrinsky; the delicate tones of the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble led by Jirong Huang; and the Lil’wat family performance group Tzo’kam, led by Russell Wallace. We look forward to the unique and original collaborations to be presented by this afternoon’s special guests. Immediately following the concert is the always-delicious traditional Ukrainian Supper.

ABORIGINAL VOICES: Lee Maracle and Bev Sellars

Celebrated writers and elders Lee Maracle and Bev Sellars read from their latest works. Lee Maracle, a member of the Stó:lō Nation, is the author of a number of critically acclaimed literary works and one of the first Indigenous female authors published in Canada. Her most recent works are Talking to the Diaspora, a poetry collection, and Memory Serves, a collection of oratories given over the span of twenty-two years. Bev Sellars was Chief of the Xat’sull (Soda Creek) First Nation in Williams Lake for more than twenty years, and now serves as a member of its Council. She continues to speak out on behalf of her community. Her first book, They Called Me Number One, won the 2014 George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature. Her most recent work is PRICE PAID: The Fight for First Nations Survival.
