THE IMPACT OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION

This symposium will generate dialogue and discussion about how drugs and alcohol affect the lives of those around people with addictions, including the children who are parented by them and the people who love them. The morning panel will focus attention on the needs of children whose parents are addicts, identify the risks involved for these children and the special needs that arise out of their parent’s addiction, the obstacles faced in getting those needs met, and brainstorm potential solutions and next steps. The afternoon panel will look at the issues pertinent to caregivers and significant others of drug/alcohol addicts, including how addiction impacts their personal lives. Speakers to be confirmed. Ms. Lerman’s ideas about the roles of art and culture in our rapidly changing world are deeply relevant; these are creative and integrative approaches, rooted in many years of experimentation and experience. Facilitated by Judith Marcuse, we welcome participants interested in the diverse field of art in community and social change, and how art practices enrich and inform every sector of our communities. Headlines Theatre opens the final afternoon of their six-day, community-based Theatre for Living workshop to a small number of audience members who will be invited to participate in a Forum Theatre process on the short plays that workshop participants have created. Forum Theatre involves audience members stopping action in the performance and taking the place of a cast member in an attempt to alter the outcome of the play. The plays and the audience and participant insights will be recorded as part of the research for the main stage after homelessness… project taking place in November. Does the Downtown Eastside have a sense of humour? Jim Dewar thinks so! Jim’s goal is to express just that through the production and publication of a book of cartoons. A recipient of a Downtown Eastside Small Arts Grant, Jim first had a couple of his cartoons published in the April/May 1999 issue of the DERA Newsletter. A practicing artist for more than thirty years and a permanent resident of the Downtown Eastside since 1995, Jim’s exhibit presents a retrospective of his work combined with exciting new material. The Opening Reception will feature several circulating mock up copies of his book, a talk and a musical performance by Jim, who is also an accomplished guitarist. A collaboration between Leaky Heaven Circus, RayCam Community Centre and the Russian Hall. The weekend before Hallowe’en theatre artists collaborate with community members and children to survey our darkest fears! (A haunted house?) Join the HOWL tour of the Russian Hall and be subject to a variety of frightening ordeals to awaken your deepest phobias. A survey will be taken and the phobias will be collected and calculated on a demographic map of the city. A panel of Child Psychologists, ages 8 through 14, will counsel you through a debriefing session. The Downtown Eastside Centre For The Arts is proud to present its first public show The Community Quilt Exhibit. A culmination of a six-month program of quilt workshops, this exhibit features 25 quilts from across the Lower Mainland and BC that have been created by award-winning quilters, community groups, Downtown Eastside social service agencies and workshop participants. A fine example of communities coming together to create this joint initiative, this unique exhibit culminates with a Community Quilt Live & Silent Auction on Saturday October 24.
